Slate ("we," "us," or "our") is a movie discovery and social app. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using Slate, you agree to this policy.
1. Information we collect
Depending on how you use Slate, we may collect:
- Account information— email address, password (stored by our auth provider), display name, username/handle, profile photo, bio, and optional website URL.

- Device and app data— push notification tokens, basic device/app diagnostics, and crash or performance information needed to operate and improve the service.
- Usage data— how you interact with features in the app (for example, viewing films, posting reviews, or following other users).
2. How we use information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide, maintain, and improve Slate
- Create and manage your account and profile
- Enforce our age requirements and safety rules
- Show your activity to people you choose to connect with
- Send service-related notifications you enable
- Prevent abuse, spam, and security incidents
- Comply with legal obligations
We do not sell your personal information.
3. How information is shared
Your information may be shared in these ways:
- With other users— profile details and content you post (reviews, lists, posts, comments, follows, and similar activity) may be visible to other Slate users according to the product's social features.
- Service providers— we use trusted vendors to host and operate Slate, including authentication, database, storage, and push notification services. These providers process data only to provide services to us.
- Film metadata providers— Slate uses third-party movie databases (such as TMDB) for film and TV metadata. Requests may include technical information needed to fetch that content; we do not sell your account data to those providers.
- Legal requirements— we may disclose information if required by law, legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of users or Slate.
4. Children's privacy
Slate is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that an account belongs to a child under 13, we will block access and delete associated personal information as required by applicable law. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us information, contact us using the details below.
5. Data retention
We retain your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide Slate. If you delete your account, we will delete or de-identify personal information associated with it, except where we must retain certain records for legal, security, or operational reasons.
6. Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
7. Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to:
- Access, update, or correct your profile information in the app

Slate may be operated from the United States and other locations. If you use Slate from outside those locations, your information may be transferred to and processed in countries that may have different data-protection laws than your own.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of Slate after changes become effective means you accept the updated policy. Material changes may also be communicated in the app or by other reasonable means.
